Hearst's ironclad family trust: contest it and you're out of the will

Sam explains how William Randolph Hearst kept his media empire intact over generations. He set up a long-term legal trust that heirs cannot dispute, gives the family a fixed minority of board seats, and pays money out equally, and anyone who argues over payouts is written out of the will.

“So for example, for him, it was like, you cannot dispute this trust. And if you do dispute it, you're out of the will. And like the trust basically just says that like, Hearst, I don't forget the exact number, but Hearst hypothetically will have 8 board seats. Family members are always 2. I think it was like, you cannot argue with how much money you receive. Money is given out equally. If you want more profits, you cannot argue about it. If you do argue about it, you're out. Like things like that. Like he did these things that were quite good, uh, in terms of like making it last for a long time.”

Steal thisIf you are building something to outlast you, settle governance and payouts in a legal structure up front, with a penalty for contesting it.
