The collectible drip model turns a $20 game into $1,000 of lifetime value

A normal board game sells once for about $20, but the average Magic player spends about $100 a year for 8-9 years. That works because cards are collected, traded, and resold, giving status and investment value. Pokémon, Hearthstone, and sports cards later copied the model.

“So a normal board game, will sell for like, whatever, $20, let's call it. Well, the average Magic player is spending $100 a year for like 8 or 9 years of their hobby. So the average player is spending like $1,000. And obviously there's extreme collectors who are spending hundreds of thousands. There's casuals who fade out right away. But if you just do the math, like the LTV per customer is in the thousands of dollars per player. You could never get somebody to buy a board game for $1,000.”

Steal thisTurn a one-time purchase into an ongoing collection with status, trading, and resale value so customers keep spending in small drips.
